“Pianist Juho Pohjonen plays Bach’s Goldberg Variations from his home in Helsinki, Finland.” If you have any doubts that this news sounds exciting, we promise that the concert you are about to hear, Saturday, November 14 at 7 pm will completely change your mind.
Friends of Chamber Music has received the concert video from Juho a couple of days ago and of course, we watched it just to be sure that there wouldn’t be any technical problems. What we saw in that video went far above and beyond our best expectations. We are giving you here a sneak peek at what you are going to experience in this online concert.
You are in Juho’s living room in Helsinki, watching him casually dressed and feeling comfortable at his home. Before he puts his hands on the keys, Juho talks to us, his audience in Texas. His comments are informed and calm, offered with a sense of mindful contentment. Then, he turns to his piano. The magic begins.
The concert video unfolds along with the progression of Bach’s Variations soundscapes that are both magnificent and delicate. Having allowed us into Juho’s living room, the camera guides us, step by step. The surrounding details reveal themselves slowly and calmly, and we see plenty of light-color wood, bookshelves at the walls, live fire in the fireplace and a white orchid on a small table at the piano.
We see Juho’s hands. From different angles, both closely and from a distance, we follow his hands through this mesmerizing process of building up the Goldberg’s universe. He does it joyfully but with total control, calmly but with the energy that doesn’t vanish for a second.
It is riveting. We are pulled in, and that is the place and the state of mind in which we want to be.
Slowly, we begin to realize that an hour has passed, and the sun that pours through Juho’s living room windows has almost made its way down to the horizon. Large trees, with their lush green foliage, become silhouettes outside, and Juho plays the beautiful and simple Aria at the end of the Variations at dusk. Peacefully, the last notes of the Goldberg’s final cadence sync with the darkening living room.
This is the most essential chamber music experience that we may think of, both beautiful and unique. We invite you to join us and to share it.
If you have already made your reservation, please be patient with us. Friends of Chamber Music has been working around the clock to complete this project just in time for its premiere.
